Memories

Kevin Warrington - Shareholder:

"We lived at Leigh Park in the early 1960's - the Atlanteans were introduced on route 143 to and from Portsmouth - I remember travelling on them in the first few days of service.  Later, I would regularly travel on service 148A to school.  A regular bus on this service was none other than 236.  It still has the same characteristics to it - the engine noise, the whine of the electric motors that work the doors and the slam that they make as they close."

During the celebrations on 4th November, we chatted with many people.  One was a life long former Portsmouth Corporation driver who had started at about the time the Atlanteans were introduced.  One of his first tasks had been to drive to Weybridge to collect a new vehicle, not actually 236, but one of the earlier batch delivered in 1963.  He gave us some of the opinions of his colleagues from the time.  Everyone was favourable with comments like "so easy to drive, compared with the half cabs", "heaters that work", "no more cold, drafty cabs".

We also had a few members of the public pass comment - all along the line of "it's one of those lovely old buses"

We're going to add further memories of this bus as we collect them
