These first 2 pictures were taken on Saturday 4th November 2006
as part of the celebrations to mark 75 years of route 17 / 18 in Portsmouth.
Backed
up to the Guildhall Steps, we see 236 with destination blinds set for route
17. The first duty that day was to take the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and
other dignatories on a nostalgic trip around Portsmouth to the site of the
former bus garage (and originally tram shed) in Highland Road, Eastney.
Photographed
from the top of the Guildhall Steps, looking toward the modern Council Offices,
236 is getting a lot of attention from passers by.
Your web master was driver on this day. We were trying to
remember how long ago it would have been since buses in traditional colours were
running in Portsmouth, or since these early Atlanteans were in daily service.
Somewhere around 30 years we think. Nevertheless, approaching almost every
bus stop, intending passengers rose and stuck out a hand to stop us, even though
our ultimate destination screen showed we were heading to somewhere called PRIVATE. We ran
every trip full up, standing room only.
